Find The Gate You Need

Prior to placing your order, please determine which configuration and size will work for your staircase.

Find the gate that fits your home

The Stair Barrier comes in two configurations. Use this guide to measure your opening and choose the right fit — or reach out and we'll help you figure it out.

1
Choose your configuration
(BB) Banister to Banister
Two banisters on either side of your staircase. Clips in place — no drilling required.
No drilling
(WB) Wall to Banister
One side mounts to the wall, the other attaches to a banister. Minimal drilling on the wall side only.
Minimal drilling

We no longer offer wall-to-wall or custom sizes
If your staircase has walls on both sides with no banisters, see the Crafted Gates option at the bottom of this page — they may have what you need.
2
Measure your opening
Banister to banister
Measure from the innermost edge of the first banister to the innermost edge of the second banister. If you have volute (curved) banisters where spindles wrap around, measure from spindle to spindle instead (Fig. 2).

Get the tightest fit
Example showing acceptable 1 inch gap between gate and banister
If your opening is within 2″ of a size boundary Buy the smaller size. A gap of up to 1″ between the fabric and the banister is within safety guidelines. If the opening is closer to the larger size, go wide.
Wrapping extra fabric around spindles to get a tighter fit
No riser at the base of your spindles? Wrap the extra fabric around the banisters or spindles to take up the slack and create a tighter, more secure fit.
Attaching buckles to multiple spindles behind the banister
Attach to multiple spindles Clipping the buckles to multiple spindles behind the banister is often the best way to get the tightest and most secure installation. Try different combinations until you find what works.
