When the Stair Barrier Isn’t the Right Fit

Our Stair Barrier is designed to blend seamlessly into beautifully lived-in homes. However, because every staircase is unique, there are certain configurations where the gate may not install securely enough to provide safe, reliable protection for children and pets.

In the situations below, we recommend reviewing compatibility carefully before purchasing. If you’re unsure, our support team is always happy to help you determine whether the Stair Barrier is the right solution for your home.

Staircase Types That May Not Be Compatible

• High risers at the front or sides

  The bottom buckle requires a low attachment point. Staircases with tall or raised risers may not allow the gate to anchor securely.

• Direct installation at the top of stairs

  For safety reasons, the Stair Barrier should not be installed directly at the top step or edge. We recommend positioning the gate at least 10 inches back from the stair edge.

• Glass panels or stone surfaces

  Staircases with glass, stone, or other hard surfaces on one or both sides may not allow proper attachment of wall-to-banister hardware.

• Horizontal spindles

  The Stair Barrier buckles are designed for vertical attachment. Horizontal spindles may not provide a secure or reliable connection.

• Wire or cable railings

  These railings are typically horizontal and do not offer suitable attachment points for safe installation.

• Handrails that obstruct the opening

  Because the gate measures 32 inches in height, handrails that cross or block the opening may interfere with proper installation.

• Intricate or uneven wrought iron designs

  Highly decorative or uneven ironwork can prevent the buckles from sitting evenly, which may compromise stability and safety.
